Roberto Vincenzi

I was born in Genoa in 1949. Psychology has interested me since I was a child, and I’ve gone through a long series of experiences that lead me to become a Psychotherapeutic Psychologist, registered with the Ordine degli Psicologi della Liguria.

In March 1974 I took an internship and was followed by Franco Basaglia, at the Psychiatric Hospital in Trieste. The internship focused on a project for assisting patients once they had left the hospital. In that year, along with other people who were interested in this problem, we founded ADIS (Associazione Di Intervento Sociale [Social Intervention Association]) together in Genoa.

In October 1974, I participated in a long internship at the Criminal Psychiatric Hospital in Castiglione delle Stiviere (Mantua); at that time Castiglione was the only one Criminal Psychiatric Institute in Italy, that was trying to psychiatrically manage the patients, not just jail them.

In May 1974 I graduated in Jurisprudence at the University of Genoa.

At that time I was strongly influenced by the ideas of Franco Basaglia, Giovanni Jervis, Erving Goffman, R.D. Laing, Thomas S. Szasz, David Cooper, Wilhelm Reich, Morton Schatzman, Herbert Marcuse and Theodor W.Adorno.

In all those years of training, from 1974 to 1987, in order to support myself financially, I worked on many fronts. Along with my work in psychology, I worked with an agency that sold wholesale steel products.

From 1978 to 1981 I worked as a sociotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic operator at the "Daily" Community in Genoa Pegli Multedo. The community housed adult schizophrenic patients, as well as people with neurological handicaps and psychosis, as well as a few drug addicts with psychiatric problems – people who we now consider affected by a “double diagnosis”.

In this job, we were mainly inspired by Paul Claude Racamier, and by the Systemic Psychology of Paul Watzlawick; as well as Mara Selvini Palazzoli’s work and the institutional therapy methods for psychosis used by Montinari.

After that, I began my analysis, which went on for six years, firstly with Ada Cortese, afterwards with Silvia Montefoschi for a short time, and finally with Giandomenico Montinari who also followed me as my supervisor.

In December 1987 I opened my own private studio.

From 1989 to 1994 I took a four-year course in Psychoanalytically Oriented Psychotherapy at the IFPIA Institute (Istituto di Formazione in Psicoterapia a Indirizzo Analitico) in Genoa; at the same time I was going to the IMCI Institute (Istituto Mente e Corpo Integrati) in Genoa, to take courses on hypnosis and relaxation techniques; in those same years, I participated in the Arteterapia [Art Therapy] lab as well as the Psychomotility lab in the Centro Studi di Psicoterapia e Psicologia Clinica in Genoa.

From 1987 to 1994 I was supervised by the Centro Studi di Psicoterapia e Psicologia Clinica in Genoa.

During this whole time, and afterwards, I deepened my knowledge of the classic authors, most especially Freud and Jung.

The courses that I took and the work experience I had were considered the equivalent to a degree in Psychology, and allowed me, in June 1995, to become a member of the Ordine degli Psicologi della Liguria and qualified to work as a Psychotherapist.

Another experience I had in those years, was the study and application of the techniques of thermal shock (“Packs”) for the treatment of psychosis, invented in Paris by Jean Francois Césaro.

During that time, I also met Carlos Alberto Arestivo, a Paraguayan Psychiatrist and worked together with him on a therapy project aimed at helping torture victims; after that, I was speaker for Amnesty International on the topic of physical and psychological coercion.

From 1990 to 1994 I worked together with Montinari in managing a private clinic for psychotic patients, with the application of staff multimodal therapy.

For a certain time, I was interested in Parapsychology and the work of the medium Aldo del Negro from Turin; I then worked together with Father Ferrarotti, at the time the Exorcist of Genoa, to study, from a psychotherapeutic point of view, cases of assumed possession.

I visited the "Le Betulle" clinic in Appiano Gentile (Como), working on therapy for people with serious depression.

I also helped with the therapy of patients suffering from DOC (OCD) according to the methods of J.M. Schwartz.

I’ve worked with LIDAP (Lega Italiana Disturbo Attacchi di Panico) and AICE (Associazione Italiana Contro l'Epilessia) to start-up self help groups.

Since 1990 I’ve been a member of the editors of the magazine "Aggiornamenti di Psicoterapia e Psicologia Clinica".

I regulary write articles for the magazines "Diagnosi & Terapia", "Rivista di Chiropratica" , “Alpes” and "50 & più"; all these articles can be found on my website.

In 1994/1995, I was a teacher at the HNH Association (Handicap Non Handicap) in Genoa, holding a course for therapeutic operators working with mentally retarded patients or bearers of physical or mental handicaps.

In 1998, along with Arch. Marco Vimercati, consultant and expert in communications, I founded and managed the "Eureka" project holding courses in creative writing and personal growth groups, through an experience lab on the development of creativity.

From December 2000 to March 2001, I taught a course for counselors at A.P.R.E.S.P.A. "Associazione Per Ricerche e Studi di Psicologia Applicata" in San Donà di Piave (VE).

Since 2004 I’ve been a member of CIRS (Centro Interdisciplinare per Ricerca e la Formazione in Sessuologia) directed by Jole Baldaro Verde; together with other members (psychologists, psychiatrists, gynecologists, neurologists and doctors) we wrote the book: "Luci e ombre nella coppia di oggi. Analisi dei mutamenti nelle relazioni tra uomini e donne" [Light and Shadow in Today’s Couples: Analysis of the Changes in Relationships between Men and Women], published in 2006 by Franco Angeli Editore.

Since April 2006 I’ve been registered in the Albo dei Consulenti Tecnici (CTU) (Court of Law Consultant) of the Tribunale di Genova.

Since May 2006 I’ve been a teacher at the "Scuola di Psicoterapia Istituzionale" of Genoa, recognized by the MIUR (Ministry for Universitiy and Scientific Research) with decree num. 03/04/2003 n.152. Here I hold classes on psychotherapy.

Since December 2006 I’ve been and editor of the multimedia encyclopedia Wikipedia, for some of the entries on psychology.

In the months of January/ and February 2007, I held courses for teachers at the Centro Italiano Opere Femminili Salesiane - Formazione Professionale Liguria, in Genoa

At the moment, my main activity is my private studio working with adult patients suffering from neurosis. Together with psychiatrists and neurologists I also work with borderline psychotic patients.
